The greater sage grouse does not require federal protection in Nevada and 10 other Western states, Department of Interior officials announced Tuesday in a long-awaited decision with profound economic ramifications across the Silver State.
What was described as the largest land conservation effort in U.S. history makes listing of the greater sage grouse as an endangered or threatened species unnecessary, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge outside Denver. The event was attended by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, the governors of Colorado, Montana and Wyoming and top officials from the Obama administration.
