Nevada Conservation League Celebrates President Biden’s Executive Action to Rejoin Paris Climate Agreement

LAS VEGAS, NEV.– In his first day in office, President Joe Biden took swift action to address the climate crisis with an executive order to reenter the United States in the Paris Climate Agreement, a move that restores the country’s position of global climate leadership.

“Today, President Biden rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement and proved to the world that America is ready to take bold and aggressive action on climate change,” said Paul Selberg, Executive Director of the Nevada Conservation League. “Nevada has simultaneously borne the brunt of climate change – with Las Vegas and Reno named two of the fastest warming cities in the nation – while also enacting policies to protect our public lands, invest in renewable energy, and significantly reduce statewide pollution. The Nevada Conservation League is excited to have a President that recognizes that we as a nation must do more to protect ourselves from the devastating effects of climate change – not just with words, but with action.”

Rejoining the Paris climate accord represents a first and important step in advancing a bold, ambitious, and aggressive climate agenda outlined by President Biden on the campaign trail. President Biden’s team has signaled additional executive action during the early days of the incoming Administration that will restore scientific integrity, reposition the country as a climate leader, create jobs, and protect public health.

States, including Nevada, continue to be at the forefront of the work toward national and global decarbonizing by 2050. During the 2019 Legislative Session, Nevada passed Senate Bill 254, a bill aimed at reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions to near zero by mid-century. In 2019, Nevada Governor Sisolak also joined the U.S. Climate Alliance, a bipartisan coalition of 25 states committed to achieving the goals set by the international climate accord. Leaders, organizers, and community groups alike are joining the collective effort to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Nevada and our nation must continue this positive momentum around combating climate change as we develop a strong plan for recovery from this pandemic and beyond.
