Our public lands are our American birthright, and Nevadans are blessed with some of the most beautiful areas in the country. Most of these lands are available to anyone willing to go there, for hiking, camping, biking, hunting, fishing or any other outdoor recreation opportunity. There are some that are calling for these public lands to be transferred to state control because of frustration about decisions by land management agencies. These proposals ignore the staggering costs of land management that are currently borne by the federal government. These costs include firefighting, horse management, habitat restoration, litigation and myriad other issues that our state is not equipped to handle. The best way to keep public lands in public hands is to maintain our current system of federal management and provide those agencies the resources they need to succeed.
